Thessaloniki is a lively modern city, bustling with life and movement with its university and international trade fair. The city consists of large avenues, parks and squares and lines of trees that frame commercial streets with showy shop windows. There are old houses, Neoclassical buildings and modern dwellings. Yesterday meets today at old taverns, “ouzeries”, restaurants and luxury bars, cinema halls, theatres and confectioner’s shops, which arrange their seats and tables on street pavements and squares. Small taverns and basement pastry shops offer a delicious variety of famous Macedonian specialties. The upper city (Ano Poli) is full of poetry and charm. In neighbourhoods with narrow streets and lovely small gardens, there are popular songs and the sweet smell of night flowers. The International Exhibition of Thessaloniki (Helexpo) centralises visitors from all over the world. Aside from this exhibition, all year round, you will find a large amount of departmental exhibitions with visitors from Greece and neighbouring countries. The shops in the commercial streets of Thessaloniki (Tsimiski, Venizelou, Agias Sofias, Ermou, Mitropoleos, Egnatia and M. Iossif Street) offer a variety of jewellers, popular arts and crafts objects, clothing and more to satisfy even the most demanding tastes. At every step, you can hear the heart of Thessaloniki throb.
